Continuing from there, it had been around 7 or 8 months since we had gone our separate ways. For both of us, those months were terrible. Since Dalton and I were in a lot of the same classes, I’d walk in and Dalton would just glare at me. Talk about some harsh feelings… We didn’t speak much, but there was an obvious tension between us.
Since we were in the same circle of friends, we had been in the same group for a dance or two where we both went with other people. Those nights were filled with awkward eye contact and unwillingly searching for the other one in the dance floor. For the most part, no words were spoken but it’s safe to say that both of us knew something didn’t feel right.
When the school year was almost over, the baseball team was having a bonfire, at Dalton’s house. Of course, as a then single lady, I invited myself. I didn’t want to miss it. Partially, because a few of my friends were invited but mostly because I wanted to see Dalton.
I stayed off to the side all night, just sitting on a tailgate with a few friends, watching everyone else. Admittedly, I was feeling jealous anytime Dalton was talking to anyone else, but I rolled my eyes and played it off. It felt like he didn’t seem to notice I was even there until people started leaving, and I stayed. Once again, we ended up being the last few people at the party.
At the time, I didn’t have a big plan to “get him back.” I was newly single and thought that I didn’t want to jump into something else. I really didn’t have any intentions other than the fact that it wasn’t that late, I was having fun, and I didn’t want to leave yet. Apparently, life had other plans and I was so wrong. I remember that eventually, we started talking. Somehow, he got ahold of my phone and started swiping through every picture and eventually placed his arm around my waist.
After I got home that night, I was hopeful that we’d be able to get back to where we started… and we did. We had a complete do over. Another first date. Another first kiss.
Dalton’s bonfire where we reconnected was in May. Later that summer, on August 3, 2013, is when things changed. We were watching a movie in my dad’s man cave. He looked over and asked me what makes two of our friends “official.”
“He asked her to be his girlfriend and she said yes…” I replied.
“Well, is that something you want?” He asked.
“Uh, sure!” I said.
And then we lived happily ever after! Well not entirely, there’s a lot more to the story than that.
However, this was all perfect, and restarted the path that we followed to end up where we are today!
Stay tuned for the next part of our love story
